Fighting Food Waste in Horsens: How One Simple Youth Initiative Can Make a Difference

In a world where sustainability is a shared responsibility, food waste stands as one of the most urgent yet often invisible challenges of our time. Every day, tons of perfectly good food are discarded by supermarkets due to approaching expiry dates or minor packaging issues. In Horsens, Pangaea Youth Network (PYN) is turning the tide on this reality. Through our partnership with Netto, we have launched a community-driven initiative that transforms surplus food into an affordable resource for students and locals alike, proving that rescuing food is not just about protecting the environment—it’s about strengthening our community.

Sustainability in Action: Turning Supermarket Surplus into Social Good

Food waste is one of the biggest hidden challenges in modern society. Every day, tons of perfectly good food are discarded by supermarkets—not because the quality is compromised, but due to packaging errors, approaching expiry dates, or simple overstock.

In Denmark, sustainability is more than a buzzword; it is a shared responsibility. At Pangaea Youth Network (PYN), we have decided to turn this challenge into an opportunity for our community in Horsens.

From Supermarket Surplus to Community Table

We have partnered with Netto to create a direct way to rescue surplus food. Instead of fresh produce and bakery items being thrown away, we collect them and share them through our community initiative, so good food stays in use and supports people in Horsens.

The idea is simple, but the impact is real: we reduce food waste, support young people and local residents who are trying to manage everyday costs, and create a reason for people to meet each other. International students, Erasmus participants, young professionals, and local families can all benefit — and at the same time, the initiative strengthens community life by turning surplus into shared support.

A Circle of Solidarity: Where Does the Money Go?

Transparency is at the core of PYN. The small contribution collected from each bag is not profit in the traditional sense. It is an investment back into Horsens.

Every kroner collected goes directly into funding:

  • Community events that bring people together.

  • Volunteering projects that empower local youth.

  • Social impact activities that make our city a better place to live.

Essentially, by rescuing food, you are not just feeding yourself; you are fueling the next generation of changemakers.

Why This Matters

Sustainability is about the environment, but it is also about people. By rescuing food, we are actively:

  1. Lowering CO₂ emissions linked to food production and waste.

  2. Reducing landfill waste, keeping our planet cleaner.

  3. Supporting our neighbors with limited budgets.

  4. Building a connected community where we look out for one another.
