The Dilemma: Ethics vs. Reality ⚖
We didn't hold back. The topic was: "Do the environmental and ethical benefits of going vegan outweigh the socio-economic and public health challenges?" It’s a heavy question, but the atmosphere was anything but heavy. In true Pangaea style, the room was filled with laughter, respect, and a very relaxed vibe.
The Anatomy of the Argument: Two Rounds of Wit ⏱⚖
We didn't just "talk"; we followed a high-stakes, structured format that kept everyone on their toes. We actually ran this entire cycle twice, allowing different perspectives to clash and evolve.
Here is how the "battle" was fought:
The Opening (3 mins per duo): Each side laid out their ground, from the environmental urgency of plant-based diets to the complex socio-economic realities of global food systems.
The Crossfire (3 mins total): This is where the sparks flew! A direct, fast-paced exchange where teams could challenge each other’s logic in real-time.
The Rebuttal Speech (3 mins per duo): After the chaos of the crossfire, teams had to dismantle their opponents' arguments with surgical precision.
The Grand Crossfire (2 mins total): A final, intense opportunity for all participants to engage simultaneously. It was fast, it was loud, and it was brilliant.
The Final Speech (1.5 mins per duo): The closing statements. Each group had 90 seconds to leave a lasting impression on the room.
Our host Viho was the ultimate timekeeper and observer, meticulously taking notes during the first round. However, the energy was so infectious that he couldn't stay on the sidelines for long—he jumped right into the arena to participate in the second debate!
A World Map in One Room 🌍
One of the best parts of the night was the diversity. We were a group of 10 people, but we represented almost every corner of the globe. We had voices from:
Poland 🇵🇱, Peru 🇵🇪, Spain 🇪🇸, Pakistan 🇵🇰, Moldova 🇲🇩, and Bulgaria 🇧🇬.
Seeing so many different cultural perspectives on food and ethics is exactly why the Debate Club exists.
